MOM and DAUGHTER try to convince SON. In A Mother’s Son, David Norton writes about his mother and the relationship that she had with her husband, Dean. The book starts out as a typical father to son story in which David’s mother is determined to prove that she loved her husband. Unfortunately, her actions backfire and make her lose all of the support that she and Dean had for each other.
While Dean and David do not directly argue throughout the book, David’s mother continually tries to convince him that he should talk to his dad about their problems. As a result, David does talk to his father about his feelings for his mom, but Dean is not willing to listen. When David does find someone who will listen to him, it is not always the girl he wants to sleep with. When he is with his friend, Dean ends up smacking him, which earns him a scolding from his father. This causes David to be withdrawn from his friends and makes him want to run away from home. Eventually he does go back to talk to his dad, but this time he does not want to run away again.
While it may be unrealistic to think that your mom would change her ways and start being mean to you, the reader does learn that there is at least one instance when she did try to help. After David’s mom finds out about a prank caller she stopped receiving calls from, she lets David knows about it. Although David is upset with her because he feels like she is trying to use him to get back at him, his mom tells him that he has done nothing wrong. Although it may not be realistic to think that your mom would change her ways to help you out of a bind, this example illustrates just how important your mom’s input can be.
