My stepmother had moved in with us a few years ago and before I was even five years old, she already started to exert control over the lives of not only myself but also our entire family. It wasn’t long before she started making snide remarks at my siblings and telling us to go to bed earlier or get some exercise. Not long after that she started complaining about my favorite television shows and asked if we could watch Spongebob on the television instead. And then one day she took it upon herself to start criticizing the food that we were eating, the clothes that we were wearing, and the friends that we spent time with. This went on for months until I finally confronted her about it and guess what?
She denied all of these accusations and when I confronted her about it again she simply told me that she didn’t mean any of the things that she had said and that she was only trying to be supportive for me. This went on for another few months and even though I wanted to kick her out of my house at the slightest opportunity, I couldn’t do so because of the joint custody arrangement that we had. But one night my stepmother was away from the house and I decided that it would be my duty to take care of her for a few days while she was gone. Unfortunately for me, this turned out to be the beginning of the end.
My stepmother became more irritated with me every day, calling me derogatory names, telling me that I needed to go to the bathroom before I did something, and generally being very spiteful. This went on for months and when it became obvious to me that I could no longer handle her behavior any longer, I decided that enough was enough and that I was done being pushed around by this woman.
