It takes a moment for Mom to process what she just heard and say “Oh no, He didn’t!” This only gets worse when Step Mom says “You CAN’T afford to pay for a babysitter, you are broke are you not? “To which my Step Son responds, “Well I thought that you didn’t want me to pay to be a babysitter, you’re not even making me feel special are you?” You can see by the two responses that a heated conversation had just occurred.
What I found helpful is realizing that just as I was being talked down to, a close friend of mine who is a single parent chimed in and said “Just stop talking about it. We’re having one of those conversations about everything and I don’t want you to talk about this. It’s stressing me out.” He went on to say how that he felt that if I continued to be stressed out over something that I would end up making decisions that were short-sighted and make things worse for both me and my little boy. It’s moments like these that help me realize that if a child was stressed out over something that you as a parent should be too concerned about, it will only create more problems for you and your family.
I have to admit that I was relieved when my Stepson interrupted our 15 minute silence and said, “I just thought it would be better if you two were alone.” I was relieved because I had been wanting to say that for so long but couldn’t think of anything to say. I think he was just trying to make sure that we were still on the same page and not trying to change the situation. Either way, this little incident has made me a lot more positive and realize that when my Stepson has a problem that my job is to listen and try and calm them down.
