Stiefmutter will Smith: Ficken Up and Forget It is based on the famous “Stiefelstein” family saga. The book in itself tells the story of Henry, a boy who lives in a poor house with his alcoholic father and older brother. When he gets a chance to talk to his father one day, he overhears his father bragging about his wealth and how he wants to use that wealth to buy a new home for himself. Unbeknownst to Henry, his alcoholic father has plans to murder his brother and dispose of their family estate so he can take over the family fortune. In order to stop his father from carrying out his nefarious plans, Henry must find out the identity of his evil step-sister, find the whereabouts of his murdered father, and enlist the help of a few unlikely people along the way. With help from some unlikely people and a whole lot of effort, Henry and his quest to uncover the identity of his sinister step-sister will uncover a plot that will change the course of history and possibly alter the course of their family’s future.
The main storyline revolves around the events that take place during the infamous “Great Depression.” The book alternates between the short stories that each main character is involved in and the long time sequences that take place between those events. In addition to the short and the long novels, there is also a large amount of foreshadowing and mythology throughout the book. For example, there is a lengthy description of Henry’s home life before he left home to go to college and to work, and during that time he had several romantic encounters that eventually led him to marry Flo Smith. I enjoyed the foreshadowing of other elements of his past, and some of these were laugh out loud funny events that added a certain degree of levity to some of the heavier material that took place. However, the entire book did lack in content, as it was largely rehashing the previous stories and the climax of the book really did not happen until the end.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, though there were parts that could use a bit more development or maybe a better ending. But overall I thought the book was okay and would probably make a good listen to someone who likes to listen to historical fiction stories like I do. If you are a fan of the historical fantasy genre, then I would definitely recommend Stiefmutter Will Smith to anyone who likes to challenge themselves with historical fiction while at the same time enjoying a light-hearted read about history’s lesser-known stories.
