Mommys Girl is a show about three young lesbians living in New York City who have romantic relationships with other young women. The show revolves around the everyday lives of these girls as they grow up and go about meeting someone new each week. The writing style of the show is very funny and biting and I found myself laughing quite a bit every time.
There are a number of different characters that Mommys Girl has and all of them are shown in a charming manner. Nina Elle is the glamorous owner of the Mommys Girl shop where the women all gather to celebrate Mom’s Day in an extravagant way. Nina is the boss who loves to tease her step women but there is a secret in her step daughter’s life that she does not want her to know. Rosewood is the sexy drag queen that the girls all look up to and Cher is the Jewish girl that helps Rosewood with his confidence. Meryl Streep plays the role of the supportive mom that everyone wants to be with but at the beginning of the show, she has feelings for Rosewood.
The best thing about Mommys Girl is that it provides a window for some gay women who feel comfortable letting out their sexual identity. Meryl Streep plays the perfect straight woman, but at the beginning of the show she lets her true inner feeling out by telling her stepdaughter that she likes a guy. There are a lot of shows that deal with lesbian issues but most of them are only in the minority. A lot of the media focus is on showing the straight woman having lesbian encounters with the wrong person. There is nothing wrong with that so long as it stays within the character’s perspective and does not make the character unbelievable. I am happy to say that Mommys Girl is one of the few shows out there that deals with a Lesbian heroine that is straight and shows the world how that can be done.
